The Curious Story Behind Misty's Name

As we all know, Misty's name in Japan is Kasumi. So how did she get the name Misty in the US? Obviously, Kasumi means Mist, but I was chatting online with two different Nintendo of America employees, and it turns out there could be more behind her name than we expected. I don't have any verification for this story, but I heard it from two unrelated sources, so there must be some truth behind it.

Anyways, as I said, I was talking to a Nintendo of America employees. I guess he knows that I'm a Misty fan, and so he said that he knew the "real Misty." Apparently Misty was named after this "real Misty." A few days later, I was chatting with a former Nintendo of America employee under the name Misty, and he too said that he knew the "real Misty." This time, he went into more detail.

Apparently, Misty is the name of the girlfriend of a game tester or a localizer named Tom Eberspecher. He worked on the Pokemon games, and apparently impressed the higher-ups at Nintendo enough that they offered to let him name one of the characters. Well, he decided he wanted to memoralize his girlfriend, and since the name of the water gym leader means Mist, he chose to name her Misty.

Now, as I said, this has no verification, and if Occam's Razor is true, it'll be easier to just tack on a "y" to the word "Mist", but if this story is true, then that's pretty cool.

But is it really possible that 'Mist' could really be a nickname, I mean, we hear some of Misty's friends caller Mist in the old days.
I ask you,ajnrules, what is the real name to this "real Misty"? I don't care if you don't know it.

Hee hee. That's what I thought as well about Misty's name, but then came the stories and I'm not sure what the truth is. I don't know the name of the "real Misty," and I haven't had a chance to ask the people I talked to. I'll try to figure it out somehow.

they are right you've said that kazumi means "mist", they just put a "Y" so that it will be more ok to be use for a name..!

Pretty cool? We're watching a show with one of the main characters (back then) being named after a girlfriend of some guy I don't even know? You call that cool!?

I totaly agree with that, if I was the maker of the show I would have done the same thing. It is only natural to add 'y' onto the end of Mist to get a perfectly correct girls' name.
