Well, this is a question mostly for Waterlil, since she's made a lot of AMVs.
What program do you use to rip, and what program to you use to edit?
I've been getting footage from my old VHS tapes via CapWiz, but the quality of the footage is only as good as the quality of the program that day, and it's usually pretty bad. I've been wanting to rip the DVDs I got, but I don't have any good ripping program.
As for editing, I'm currently using Windows Movie Maker, which is serviceable but extremely limited. Got any better suggestions?

Well, I don't know any good programs for ripping episodes because I got all my episodes from a site. But it closed down. For AMVs I meanly uses Windows Movie Maker. To great good AMVs out of that, need to play around with the program.
Waterlil's Top Tips for getting (good) AMVs by using WMM 1) Play around with the program, to see what you can do. I sort of know someone who has made great Sailor Moon AMVs using WMM. 2) Practice using different types of songs. This will 1 give something new for people to watch and 2 it will give you more expense for when people start requesting AMVs 3) Find a song with a good beat. It is great excuse for using loads of flash and stuff. But don't use too many. 4) Use a song what goes with most of the clips you have. Everyone, well most people hate an AMV where the clips are justed banged together. It gives the impression that the creator hasn't put any effort into it.
I've got Vegas Movie Studio 6.0, what gives you more stuff to use. It costs around about £60 in the UK so I don't know how much it costs in the USA. But you can download a free trail. I don't have any top tips for that as I'm still trying it out but it is great for getting rid of subtitles.

There are a couple I have tried one is a program called CladDVD and what it does is rip the encryption off of the DVD but to use this look at the size of the VOB files on the DVD. Typically the largest ones are what you want to rip, there is a box in the program that shows the file size this is if you want to manually select the files but the program also has an option to rip the entire DVD which I don't recommend unless that is your first time using the program and you have a computer with a huge hard drive because DVDs typically take up about 4 GB a piece. A program I have found that can edit the ripped VOB files directly is Virtual Dub Mod which is based off of Virtual Dub which by a strange coincidence is coded by an anime fan. This program will let you edit the VOB files to the nearest frame which I believe can be useful if you intend to do any lip-sync in the videos. Virtual Dub Mod supports external codecs and the one I strongly recommend be used is Divx because it gives the highest quality and smallest file size that will be important when re-encoding the files after editing out the scenes you want. It does not have a time line for adding the video clips so Windows Movie Maker or other programs will have to be used for the final editing, encoding and adding the music when making an AMV.
